"My Switzerland" Opening
Reception Gallery 200, 200 Main Street, West Chicago
Friday, August 6, 2010 6:00 - 9:00 p.m.
Photographer Britta Renwick wants people to see Switzerland from her perspective - not only the traditional postcard photos, but how she views the details of her homeland through the lens of a camera.
Renwick was raised in Ebikon, Switzerland, a town near the city of Lucerne. Raised in an artistic family of painters, she found her calling when, at the age of 10, she picked up her father's camera and starting taking pictures. She fondly remembers how her parents paid for development of all those rolls of film. "Once I had a camera in my hand, I was unstoppable," Renwick reminisced.
An international family, Renwick and her English husband regularly return to Switzerland with their family. Now a parent herself, Renwick includes her sons Sean and Alec in the creative process whenever she has new photos to be named. Their discussion determines the official titles of the photos. Renwick said, "Of all of the steps that go into completing my finished work, I think I have the most fun naming the photographs with my boys."
Renwick continues to use the skills learned as an original student of film photography on her favorite subjects - those found in nature and candid photos of her family. She prefers not to digitally enhance her photos and uses proper lighting techniques and weather to achieve the perfect shot. "It's not photography if you can change it on the computer," stated Renwick.
Renwick believes that wall art will always have a following. However, she wants her photographs to become part of people's everyday life and has created note cards, bookmarks and placemats with her pictures as well as selling non-framed matted photos. Turning her hobby into a business, she recently launched BrittasPhotography.com and hopes that people will occasionally browse current selections.
The public is invited to a free opening reception of art for "My Switzerland" on Friday, August 6, 2010 from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. at Gallery 200, 200 Main Street, West Chicago. Cards and prints will be available for sale and traditional Swiss chocolate and food will be served. The exhibit will be on display throughout the month of August and will include works by sons Sean and Alec Renwick.
