Summer reading will be “sooo delicious” at the West Chicago Public Library District as patrons are invited to bring an appetite for reading, food and fun to the Library to “Eat~Move~Read.” As a partner in the Illinois Library Association’s iRead program, the Library will be featuring a series of programs and events for all ages around the topic of healthy eating and lifestyle choices.
“I’m so excited about this initiative that so closely relates to First Lady Michelle Obama’s comprehensive ‘Let’s Move!’ program dedicated to solving the problem of childhood obesity in a generation,” said Administrative Librarian Melody E. Coleman. “Our summer reading programs and events have been designed to encourage us to read, make changes and increase physical activity.”
As always, one of the main components of the program will be independent reading. Adults will have the opportunity this year to log their reading on line for a chance to win eReaders and other great prizes. In addition to grand prize drawings, teens completing their reading goal will each receive a free book. And children of all ages will receive a book as well as a free pass to Turtle Splash Water Park in West Chicago. Research shows that summer reading is one of the keys to preventing summer slide and improving school performance. So, in cooperation with West Chicago School District 33, the Library will be visiting all six elementary schools this month to promote the program directly to the kids.
The special programs and events which comprise the second component of the program this year will definitely get us all moving. In addition to “Survival” and “Fear Factor” challenges for kids, “Hunger Games” and “Teen Olympics Competition” for teens, and line dancing for adults, there are plans for outdoor fun and games on Wednesdays for children in the morning and “Library Lawn Parties” featuring outdoor favorites like bean bags and shuffleboard for adults on Wednesday evenings. Prizes have been supplied by the West Chicago Park District and the Friends of the Library. Registration begins May 29.
