D33 All-Day Dual Language Kindergarten

Elementary Dist 33

West Chicago Elementary School District 33 has been chosen to be featured on the Univision Special Segment Con el pie derecho to discuss the new All-Day Dual Language Kindergarten option for the 2013/2014 school year. The segment will air on Monday, April 22, 2013 at 10pm.

Mrs. Michelle Eggarter-Lewis, dual language kindergarten teacher, will discuss the benefits for children enrolled in an all-day kindergarten program. Among others, children benefit significantly from the increased amount of instructional time. Additionally, all-day kindergarten allows time for re-teaching and differentiation; and participation in special programs such as art, music and physical education.

Eggarter-Lewis will also discuss how interested parents can register their child in the Dual Language program. To register, parents can visit their home school on the specified day for kindergarten registration and choose the Dual Language/All-day or Half-Day Kindergarten option on the registration form. As in the past with the Dual Language program, students will be chosen by lottery.

“We are very excited to offer this option to our parents in District 33. All-day kindergarten was one of the goals adopted by the board in the District 33 long-term strategic plan developed in 2011. After months of research from both the academic and operational perspectives, the Board of Education chose to pilot an all-day kindergarten option within the Dual Language program at Gary School. This option is cost neutral to District 33and pilot results will be used for future program expansion feasibility,” said Dr. Kathy Wolfe, Superintendent.

Half-day Dual Language Kindergarten will continue to be offered in order to accommodate parent preference, as well as comply with the Illinois School Code (105ILCS5/10-22-199).
District 33 will be hosting a Dual Language open house for prospective parents on April 23, 2013 from 6pm – 8pm at Gary Elementary School, 130 E. Forest Avenue, West Chicago. Parents will learn about the Dual Language Program as well as the all-day kindergarten option.
