Thanks to the efforts of Administrative Librarian, Melody E. Coleman, a unique partnership has been developed between the West Chicago Public Library District (WCPLD), DuPage African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church, and the Illinois Youth Correction center (IYC) in Warrenville. The program, named BEND (Books Enlighten, Nourish and Delight), provides quarterly delivery of books and magazines to the juvenile females incarcerated at IYC-Warrenville.
Reading gives us a place to go even when we have to stay where we are! This summer, as a partner in the Illinois Library Association’s iRead program, the Library will be featuring a series of programs and events for all ages that invite patrons to book a trip, travel around the world, and be transported through time to magical places with their summer reading program theme, “Have Books – Will Travel!”
The West Chicago Public Library District is preparing for two special programming events featuring Tea @ the Library. On Saturday, May 11, the Library will host its 11th annual Mother & Daughter Tea in honor of Mother’s Day from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. This year’s theme will feature an elegant Victorian Tea party, and all are encouraged to come dressed in beautiful dresses to learn about proper etiquette, make a Victorian fan and learn the language of the fan. Mothers, daughters, grandmothers, and aunts, along with girls ages 5 and up, are invited to join this marvelous, time-honored tradition in celebration of Mother’s Day!

The sweet smells of zucchini bread wafted through the West Chicago Public Library last Thursday evening as the Library kicked off its “WeGo for Wellness” cooking series with “Breakfast that Rocks!” to a packed house.
The West Chicago Public Library District is the recipient of a Community Health Benefit Grant from Cadence Health in support of its efforts to address factors leading to obesity, reducing obesity, and reducing the burden of obesity-related disease in the community. West Chicago was the only library to receive this grant, and the monies totalling over $3,200 will be used as part of the Library’s “WeGo for Wellness” program series which begins March 2 and runs through May 25.
The library of the future was the topic of conversation at a recent staff in-service training day at the West Chicago Public Library District. Administrative Librarian Melody E. Coleman designed an agenda that covered several aspects of library services and programming for the 21st century, presented by various Library staff members, as well as safety and security issues presented by the West Chicago Police Department.
The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) has announced that the West Chicago Public Library District is among 842 libraries and state humanities councils in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands to be awarded the Muslim Journeys Bookshelf, a collection of books, films, and other resources intended to introduce the public to the complex history and culture of Muslims in the United States and around the world.
Donations are being accepted at the West Chicago Public Library District for the Friends of the Library annual book sale. The sale will be held in the Library program room from 9 am-4 pm on Friday and Saturday, March 8 and 9.
Friends of the West Chicago Public Library District (FOL) will hold its annual book sale, Friday, March 8 and Saturday March 9, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the library, 118 West Washington Street, West Chicago. The proceeds from the sale are used to support special library purchases and events.
